Garden and Sustainability Coaching

If you don't have a green thumb but want to learn.  Farmburbia is available for group and private lessons on growing your own gardens successfully.  The curriculum can be customized to fit student preference, and can include everything from DIY construction of garden accessories to soil health and structure, site selection, garden pests, sowing, weeds, maintenance and harvesting

Rabbit Hutches

Rabbits are great for the garden.  Their manure is par none, and they are one more way that I can entice my kids outside.  The "chores" of feeding, watering and cleaning the hutch are actually fun, as they take turns holding and petting the rabbits while the chores are performed.  Farmburbia can even integrate the manure into the compost servicing and maintenance.

Raised Garden Beds

Cabin Style
A. 32"x48"x9.5"
B. 32"x96"x9.5"
C. 48"x96"x9.5"
Raised beds have the added benefits of a longer growing season, better soil drainage, easier access and workability, pest control, better aesthetics, and versatility over traditional ground-level gardens.  Farmburbia can design, build and install a variety of raised garden beds based on your preferences and location specific conditions.
Our beds can be customized according to the space available in your yard.   The smallest bed measures 32"w by 48"l (4 feet) x 10.5"h and the largest measures 48"w x 96"l x 10.5"h (4'ft x 8'ft).  Beds can include trellis and teepees for climbing vines and flowers.  Maintenance Contracts are available thru the initial installation and establishment to the harvest.  Cold frames and tunnels can extend the life of your garden well in January with a variety of green leafy produce from herbs to kale, swiss chard, spinach and green leafy lettuce.  How to select the right garden bed for your yard
1.)  Select a style, "cabin" or "plank"Currently we offer two different styles, the "cabin" which is three layers of 2x4s, and the "plank" which is a single board, forming the side walls.
2.) Select a size, you may want to measure the space you have allotted for your raised beds.  Our standard width is 32 inches (nearly 3 feet) and 48 inches (4 ft.) wide, while the standard length is either 48 inches (4 ft.) or 96 inches (8 ft.).  Custom sizes can be built but require a 10% surcharge from the next closest size.
3.  Select accessories such as copper post caps, wooden or the "Hampton" post caps,  or a "seat shelf" which caps the sidewall with a 2x4 so that sitting on the edge of the bed and gardening are possible.  Finally, there is the "basic" unit with no post caps nor "seat shelves".
4.  Determine if you want a trellis or not.  They are great for climbing vegetables such as beans, peas and cucumbers, or can be used for decorative flowers such as trumpet flower or morning glory.  Trellis are 5 feet tall by nearly 4 feet wide and are attached to the side walls and corner posts.  Trellises can also run the length of a full 8 foot bed.

Compost Systems

Compost construction, installation, and management.  Compost system bins are locally constructed in Glen Rock with FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified lumber and will turn your yard debris into an organic, compost factory. Compost is an ideal soil amendment for your flower and landscaped beds, vegetable gardens and and as a top dressing for your lawn.  The 3 bin system is designed to convert “browns (dead leaves) and greens (lawn clippings, leafy prunings) into rich, dark, organic compost full of nutrients and worms that your garden naturally craves and needs. (This is the same kind of compost system on display at the New York Botanic Garden).  One initial consultation is provided with purchase.  Maintenance contracts are available April thru November to keep that compost turned and to maximize the production of "black gold"

Cold Frames

Locally constructed cold frames can be built from your choice of SFI lumber, or your locally salvaged materials.  Farmburbia will consult with you on materials and space to provide these novel "mini" greenhouses for herbs and spices to grow well into the winter.  Maintenace contracts available upon request.
